One major hurdle has been hurdled - my bricks are sitting on a palette on Kenmount Road waiting to be shipped to Conche. It will take 3 to 4 business days for them to get there and will cost less than $500. That's a pretty sweet deal.
The Grey Islands was a three-month interdisciplinary ceramic art project. During the summer of 2009 I lived alone on the Grey Islands while I made and documented a site-specific ceramic art piece.
The installation itself is quite simple. I built a wood-fired kiln according to a traditional design, only I inverted the design so that in principle the kiln is inside-out. Therefore, in a conceptual sense, the entire island is "inside" the kiln - when I fired the kiln I fired the island.
The ultimate purpose of The Grey Islands is to say that even within the material-oriented craft genres traditional hierarchies of medium and concept need to be reevaluated.
