The most recent copy of The Scope includes a DIY column written this week by yours truly, all about how to live on a deserted island. Check it out here.
I heard about your project while I was travelling this week in northern Newfoundland and the south coast of Labrador. The Grey Islands have fascinated me since I read John Steffler's book in the 80s. I wonder if you were influenced by that book? Ken Maher Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia
The Grey Islands was a three-month interdisciplinary ceramic art project. During the summer of 2009 I lived alone on the Grey Islands while I made and documented a site-specific ceramic art piece.
The installation itself is quite simple. I built a wood-fired kiln according to a traditional design, only I inverted the design so that in principle the kiln is inside-out. Therefore, in a conceptual sense, the entire island is "inside" the kiln - when I fired the kiln I fired the island.
The ultimate purpose of The Grey Islands is to say that even within the material-oriented craft genres traditional hierarchies of medium and concept need to be reevaluated.

OK, I just saw your note on the website. Steffler's book is one of my favourites -- very evocative. I look forward to seeing photos of the work.
